An eye chart that says "Not My Job Anymore"

Dear Friend,

Are books getting harder to read, or are they just shrinking out of spite? If you’ve recently caught yourself wishing your arms were longer as you hold out your book, welcome to the club. Close-up vision, it turns out, is more of a limited-time offer.

That’s why I’m toying with the idea of releasing a large print edition of my newest hardcover novel. Same story, same drama, just with letters that don’t require optimism and a magnifying glass. Libraries and bookstores would be able to order it alongside the regular version, so readers could choose standard size, or ahh, that’s better.

There is, of course, a small behind-the-scenes complication. Large print means a slightly bigger book (6x9 instead of 5.5x8.5), a resized cover, and higher printing costs—so it would be priced a bit higher. But that's why we have libraries.

For reference, large print is generally a 16 point font, compared to the 12-point most standard books use. Ebook readers, of course, casually resize text to their heart’s content. But I know plenty of people still love the feel of a physical book, and they might appreciate one that doesn’t require squinting.

So I’d love your thoughts: Do you (or someone you know) seek out large print books? Would you be more likely to pick one up if it were available?

This idea came to me as I get ready to present my book at the American Library Association conference in Chicago, June 27–29—the biggest library gathering on the planet. If you’ll be there, come find me at the IBPA booth. I’ll be answering questions, just being my friendly, book-loving self. Stop by and say hello.

Looking forward to hearing what you think!

❤️Margie
